Newcastle sydney all tied up with the club's future

With the new season now just weeks away and the team in dire straits, Newcastle boss Steve McClaren was looking to make some changes to his squad.

He was given some good advice - that any team wanting to be competitive could do so by changing the team's style.

On Thursday, the Newcastle captain Steven Taylor explained why he felt the club could take a different approach by bringing on Jack Colback from Stirling Albion.

Taylor - who has featured in just two league games this season - told BBC Newcastle: "It's just about how we want to play, to be a team who's able to take risks at times and try to win some games and score a few goals.

"You can't lose your confidence at the end of a season.

"The players want to win games in my opinion and we did that today. I am quite sure of that.

"But we didn't start to play well against Derby last weekend, we've got to build from there. We had a few opportunities to score before they scored and, of course, we have some games in the next few games.

"I think we have got to make sure we're keeping our balance on the ball and that the other side doesn't get the opportunity to hit us.

"It was a little bit of an experience challenge for us, which we probably missed the first half of the day, and we have to be a bit more aggressive and a bit more patient with that and I thought we did that today."

Aston Villa, who travel to Leicester on Tuesday, face the prospect of missing out on promotion after a late 2-0 defeat at home to Arsenal, but Taylor felt Newcastle needed to prove they could be more than just relegation fodder.

He added: "We know we can do something special, not only for ourselves, but for the rest of the Championship and the Premier League.

"We know there is quality in the game and we just have to keep fighting for every game we win to keep believing that we can do something special."

Lionel Messi's goal against Northampton helped Leicester City break the deadlock in a 2-2 draw at Northampton Town.

The hosts had to wait until the 11th minute when referee Andrew Davis awarded a penalty after the striker ran into an unmarked James Milner.

After the incident, Lille's Jamie O'Hara headed the ball home just in time and the Foxes' hopes were short-lived.

Leicester, who have missed out on the play-offs just once in the top flight since 1958, had previously won 2-1 against MK Dons in the League Cup final.

The win was their first away league win since a 4-0 thrashing of Millwall in September.

Northampton, who had missed out on promotion from League One in May, are without both James Ward-Prowse and Jamie Byam but coach Graham Arnold has said his side are not too worried about the game.

"I know what the mentality is in the League and I know that every team will be fighting with our opponents and we are just not too worried about what other teams might be doing on Saturday and we are going about things as we have been throughout the season," he told the club website.

"I think our mindset is still, we want to be playing all the time and we are always ready to take advantage of the opportunity given in the game."

The Foxes, who lost on penalties to Crystal Palace in the league's Play-Off Round, had started brightly before coming up short and after Milner was shown a straight red card after he was booked for his challenge with striker Lewis Grabban, Leonardo Ulloa was booked for fouling Milner and Thomas Ince was shown a second yellow for a tackle on Milner before both players were brought down at the other end.

Milner also got into trouble before the break with another challenge on Grabban that left the Saints keeper with no chance.

After another missed penalty, Byam saw red for a challenge on O'Hara and O'Hara then fell on the turf when his hands were caught in Milner's.

Milner eventually picked himself up and played out the remainder of his penalty-taker minutes before being replaced by James Chester and, after he was taken off, Milner again showed a desire to come out and win his second penalty of the afternoon, but had to wait for his side to draw level.

Lancashire striker O'Hara came close to scoring but missed an easy finish as it seemed the Foxes were getting ready to mount a move and his shot was saved by Craig Bellamy.
