Perth airport rail link to be sunk underground to speed up operation and reduce costs, transport network's own report has found.
The rail link between Perth and the state's capital city will soon be cut away and it will be replaced by a tunnel, Transport Minister Bill English announced on Wednesday.
"We are not looking at cutting that link to ease the burden on passengers and business, we're looking at a deeper layer of digging to speed the connection up," Mr English said.
The project will reduce costs by over $3 billion, Mr English said, and is expected to save "up to 250 jobs and significantly reduce traffic congestion".
The new tunnel will be built around a platform on a new rail tunnel under Perth that will connect with the existing track, running underneath the city centre and south west.
Mr English said the cost of the plan had not yet been determined.
"It's not going to cost taxpayers a fortune," he said.
"The tunnel costs nothing.
"As they say, there is no reason why government should ever be involved in public sector spending, but it is necessary for the success of the new tram," Mr English said.
The current tunnel will connect to the current train station, in a three-kilometre stretch between The Docklands and the old rail tunnel at the intersection of Macarthur and Portle streets.
The new tunnel is expected to run 1.8 metres deeper, meaning it will be 2.1 metres longer on the track than the existing tunnel, Mr English said.
"This tunnel is going to be bigger and more comprehensive than ever before," Mr English said.
"You're looking at hundreds of kilometres of tunnel from platform to track, and that's going to take time and billions of dollars to build."
Mr English said the underground level for the new tunnel would be about 1.4 metres deep and will be three metres higher.
The tunnel will be able to carry up to 200,000 passengers per day and the new project will see 40 new trains, including 20 new train types.
The new tunnel will link Perth's airport and a new metro station, and transport an estimated 700,000 passengers between Perth's city centre and South Fremantle every day.
While most of the tunnels to be built are under city limits, Mr English said the new tunnels should be able to be used for any purpose to the west of Perth, "so the idea is that we have a transport network from here up and west of the city for some of those future development opportunities that will arise".
